Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a generic term used to describe a mixture of isomers or forms of linoleic acid (1). CLA is a long player in scientific community, its effects started to be interesting in 1979, mostly studies are conducted on animal models, and however, there are some human studies. Altogether, along with the greatest commercial success of CLA enriched food and supplements, has made CLA one of the most promising nutrient for future applications to the health benefits of every active person.

Health benefits are numerous. Firstly, CLA gives you a better body composition, increasing lean body mass and decreasing body fat. This fact was observed both in animal and human models. In animals, CLA has shown this highly beneficial effect on pigs (2, 3), mice (4-7), rats (8) and chicks (9, 10). Human studies, 47 participants (overweight or obese adults) have shown a significant reduction in body fat mass after 12 weeks of consumption with no reduction in weight or body mass index (10).

Secondly, CLA may enhance humoral and cellular immune responses in animals and humans (11). This is very supporting for you active lifestyle.

Thirdly, there is a big discussion in scientific society, whether CLA is supportive in metabolic syndromes, cancer, lipid metabolism, diabetes, bone growth and cardiovascular disease, or not (*).
